Aluminum vs fiberglass: which hull actually lasts
The honest comparison, without the brand fight. Weight, repair, resale, and what each material really costs you after ten years.

Short answer. Aluminum wins on impact damage, repairability and weight. Fiberglass wins on finish, sound and resale in the used market. For a boat under sixteen feet that gets trailered, launched on ramps and beached, aluminum is the more rational hull. That is the reasoning behind the ADB 420, and it is a judgment about use, not a claim of superiority in every case.
01 · Weight, and why it decides everything
A hull's weight is not a spec line, it is a budget that every other decision spends from. It decides how much power you need, what your truck can tow, and whether a yacht platform can lift it at all.
| Boat, all 4.2 m | Boat only | Max power |
|---|---|---|
| Brig Falcon 420 Tender | 375 lb | Not published |
| Highfield Classic 420 | 556 lb | 60 hp |
| Highfield Sport 420 | 681 lb | 70 hp |
| ADB 420 | 683 lb, provisional | 60 hp |
| Grand Golden Line G420 | 944 lb | 60 hp |
Figures for the other boats are the makers' own published weights. The ADB figure is the base platform and is provisional until the boat as specified goes on a scale.
Five boats, all the same length, spread across 569 pounds. Length tells you almost nothing about weight. Equipment and finish tell you everything, and two of those boats come from the same maker.
02 · What happens when you hit something
Aluminum dents and keeps its shape. Fiberglass cracks and delaminates, and the repair is cosmetic work on top of structural work. On a boat that lives on a trailer and meets concrete ramps, that difference shows up in year two, not year ten.
The case for fiberglass, honestly
Fiberglass is quieter under way, takes complex curves aluminum cannot, and finishes to a depth of gloss welded plate will never reach. If your boat lives on a lift and never touches a ramp, those advantages are real and the weight penalty may not matter to you.
03 · Ten years later
The honest answer today is that we will not average the industry and present it as our own result. The 420 is the first boat, so the ten-year column is written by the boat, not by us, and this section is updated with measured data as it exists.
